Benefits of Yoga
Flexibility is the most commonly thought of benefit of practicing yoga and rightfully so when you see teachers and practitioners folded into pretzels. However, flexibility means more than simply being able to touch your toes. Physically, keeping your joints active and muscles relaxed can improve your overall health and decrease your likelihood of injury from repetitious strains (as seen often in people working at computers all day), sprains, and overextension (i.e., reaching for the top shelf or bending over to pick up laundry). Mentally, as well, yoga keeps you flexible. By releasing pain, anxiety, and fear from your major muscle groups which hold these emotions and feeling relaxed can allow you more flexibility as changes in your day occur. You are able to decrease panic and flow through your day.
Balance is another major benefit of yoga. Physically, increasing your balance decreases the likelihood of slips, trips, and falls. As well, working on balance requires the engagement of many muscles at once and can be a great way to stay toned and in shape. Mentally, yoga allows for a more balanced approach to life because it requires you to be in touch with your body and mind. You are able to see and understand the impact of even the smallest choices you make have in your life and this can lead to balanced decision making and prioritization in diet, relationships, and work.
Strength is one benefit of yoga that is often overlooked by those seeking to tone and build muscles. Yoga may seem like a passive form of exercise, but it creates considerable strength in many ways. Physically, it engages your muscles and requires them to work together as you hold postures and transition from one to another. Your legs, arms, core, and back all receive exercise from a yoga class. Mentally as well though yoga increase confidence and determination within practitioners. Each class is a series of small goals, whose accomplishments are felt instantaneously throughout your body and in the longer term via improved over all health.
